A step back

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Luckily, it was later. It's also pretty indicative of how I feel and where I am in the training cycle. After 15 consecutive weeks big gains on the bike, I had a (small) step back today. I was about 2w on average lower than last time, so around a 1% drop-off. Not much to be worried about. Considering how I felt for much of the ride, I amazed it was that close. That means the strength is there, but I was just a bit too tired to tap into it today. With a nice week of rest/taper leading to next weekend's start of the season, I'm where I need to be. I've gotten as much out of this cycle as I think I can, so I'll gas up the legs and have them ready for a spin.

  1. It must be the time of year for steps back. My bike ride was a total disaster yesterday (heavy winds didn't help either) and I woke up feeling exhausted and sore this morning.

Looking back at my training log, the entry from 3 days ago read "feel like garbage -- overtraining?".

So I did the hardest thing I could today: I took the day off. I really hate "losing" weekend training days, but if I keep pushing, I know where this leads.

The killer is that I haven't even been able to follow my training plan as closely as I wanted due to work commitments. My weeks have probably been 1/2 planned, 1/2 whatever I could squeeze in that day. Frustrating.

  2. Sorry to hear you're having some troubles, both with fatigue and hitting the plan. Keep doing what you can, and things will start to fall into place. My run today had its good and bad moments, so I know I need to get some solid rest to be OK next week.
