With my elbow flared up (although mostly healed), I cancelled tonight's session in the weight room. All that was on the schedule was a trip to the pool. After a reasonably successful outing last week, I was pretty excited for tonight's go-round.
I did do more distance than last time, but things felt a lot rougher. It may be a case of selective memory, where I only recall the few strokes that felt great, and am comparing them to every stroke tonight. I definitely felt like some of my lengths were good, but others involved more effort (for less speed). I obviously need to do the drill work, so I'll pick up some flippers this weekend and get started. I also think I did more distance than I should have, since the last few lengths were the sloppiest. I need to relax, calmly perform the actions, and then I'll reap the benefits.
Swim: 1200 m (I kept a good count this time)

Until things "click" it'll be on-again-off-again with form. Sometimes you'll feel great, other times you'll feel sloppy and inefficient. It's like learning to pedal properly (which also takes a while... if I don't make an effort to focus on spinning, I'll revert to my natural state of mashing).
Keep at it and definitely don't push past the point where your form goes to crap. There is no point in practicing bad form; you've got a solid cardio base... so your pool time should be spent on technique!
It was definitely a case of getting ahead of myself. I needed to spend more time focusing on the part of form that I was getting right the week before, instead of moving on. My balance is OK when I'm face-down, but it sucks when I rotate. That's the next step. One block at a time.
It wasn't that my form was all crap, but every length would start well, then I'd fatigue and things would deteriorate. I knew better, and it's good to be reminded. I need to take this slowly.
