Keep pushing

This morning was my full first session in the new, faster lane. Just before we got started, one of my old lane mates congratulated me on the move up, which was nice. I have to admit, I had a little bit of nervousness and trepidation as the workout started, especially looking at the board and seeing all these long sets, but I hopped in and did the best I could my hold my place. And what's surprising is that I didn't just hold my place, I ended up distancing myself from the group.

I had been in second spot (just how things fell out), and then person ahead of me got moved to the next lane (his own promotion ... congrats). So I was in first, but the guy behind me, I guess, isn't too good at the kicking drills, so he fell well behind me, causing a logjam, and by the end of the workout, I was almost caught up to the end of the pack. Even more amazing is that I did that while not hammering the pace, just keeping it where I was comfortable and focusing on form. I know I'm definitely not ready for the next lane (those folks hammer), but it feels good to know I not only belong in my new lane, but I'm at the "pointy end of the stick", as Phil Liggett would say.

Fantastico. You seem to be picking up the technique really quickly and you've already got the aerobic base from running and cycling so you're all set there. Keep that stick sharp!

I've been going through a rough patch on the bike; I actually bonked on the trainer yesterday so I took today off. Of course, instead of relaxing, now I'm all fidgety and irritable because I didn't get to exercise.

Thanks. I think more than anything it's a matter of "coachability". I know nothing about swimming, so I'm going to listen to what people who do know about swimming tell me to do. "Put my chin on my chest to lift my hips? Sure. Roll my body more for each stroke? OK."

What was the workout where you bonked? I had that happen (twice) with the Pyrenees Stage (you'll understand when I pass it over). A day off is good, and the irritability is a good sign. You'll be back and flying in no time.

Bonkage happened during an Anaerobic Capacity session, towards the end. I was doing 2 min intervals @ 350W with 1 minute recovery and just couldn't finish the last set.

I hear you on the coachability thing. In retrospect, I must've been a total pain in the ass to coach as a kid. I'm pretty sure I thought I knew everything already. The older I get, the less I know and the more willing I am to take instruction. Fortunately, I didn't start biking until after I turned 30... so I'm hopefully doing that right ;)
